You might be in for a pleasant surprise!
The team from MAR Services, who you might remember as one of our Zero Heroes of the day, have been making their environment a better place.
Twenty people including staff from Head Office donned coats, wellies and gloves and headed out to give their local park in Bracknell some TLC.
Inspired by the Big Tidy Up Campaign, the company, who offer waste and recycling services to their clients, wanted to give something back to their local community as well.
So they enjoyed a two hour walk around Savernake Park, whilst picking up litter.
The idea was to show the rest of the community how big a problem litter is, and to encourage them to start disposing of it properly.
This before and after pic shows their fantastic efforts – you no longer have to sit among cans, bottles and pizza boxes:
Apparently, over 30 million tonnes of litter are collected from our streets every year, costing taxpayers £1billion a year to clean up.
Georgia Butcher, event organiser said: “This clean-up will show others that we care about the future of our environment. What is good about working together like this, is it creates a sense of community and for some of our younger volunteers it is their first taste of active citizenship.”
I caught up with Georgia after the event. She told me they picked up an astonishing 28 bags of waste! 11 of the bags were recyclable materials including paper, cans and plastic bottles.
In amongst their finds were some bike tyres (which seemed in perfectly good condition and were given a loving home by one of the volunteers!), an electric drill, a pair of shorts, someone’s lacy dress and even a television!
The kids had a brilliant time because they got to use litter pickers and nets to dredge around the edge of the lake!
Have you ever done a litter pick? What’s the strangest item you found?
