The other week, one of our community members – Zena – told us that animal shelters love old towels, bedding and even synthetic filled pillows and duvets.
I shared this in my newsletter and more ideas came in about what we could do with old bedding
Suella shared lots of ideas including
Dye them
Dye transforms a lot of 100% cotton fabric.
Waste not want not
Worn sheets can be turned sides to middle and then sewn up the middle
Insulation
Old bedding and thin quilts can be used as insulation between curtain fabric and the plain lining for winter curtains. If you have no time, just use safety pins and cut the bedding to size. Our outer and inner hall both have such curtains which make the room much warmer.
Reuse
You can also rip sheets up and weave with them, make pennants, backings of patchwork quilts etc..
Help others
Pillowcases can make dresses for little girls here or in Africa. Find a pattern here.
Vets
Barbara wrote in with a fantastic idea for pets at the vets! She wrote “Your local vet is always glad of sheets / cotton curtains / bath mats etc for bedding and moving animals on whilst still drowsy following operations.”
What about you – what would you add to the list?
Can you recommend eco friendly dyes?
