food waste fridayWelcome to “Food waste Friday”!

It’s that time of the week when I keep myself accountable by publicly confessing to food waste that is past its best.

As Zero Waste Week 2013 gets closer, I’m not sure I’m getting any closer to eliminating food waste here at zero waste towers.

Reducing food waste is great for the environment (food that is landfilled produced methane, a potent greenhouse gas). It’s great for my bank balance (the average household in the UK throws away £50 of food per month) and it’s good for your conscience (is it really ok to throw perfectly good food away when one in eight people across the world will go to bed hungry?)

So this week I’m super annoyed because nearly an entire meal ended up in the compost heap.

I’m currently having a “Use it up!” month where we’re gradually eating the contents of the freezer. It’s so full of ice the door doesn’t always shut properly, so it’s an accident waiting to happen.

I had a few dishes of lasagne stockpiled, which happens to be one of Little Miss Green’s favourites.

Sadly though, this one didn’t hit the mark.

LMG, who will eat most things said it tasted ‘funky’ and ‘old’.

I don’t know how old it was, but as she’s not a fussy eater, I was prepared to take her word for it. When I looked it it, the cheese sauce kind of separated and was a bit lumpy in places, watery in others.

Yep if a non-fussy-eater turns down lasagne – you need to listen to them. Lasagne doesn’t generally get turned down!
