Welcome to the final day of Zero Waste Week.
I hope you’ve been planning for the grand finale!
I feel like a mother bird pushing her fledglings out of the nest.
Yes, today you’re going to take on the challenge of living without plastic.
If you’re new to zero waste, you might decide to just say no to single-use plastics. If you’ve been with me since the beginning of Zero Waste Week – TEN YEARS now! then you might be ready for a totally plastic free day.
It’s up to you.
There is no right and wrong. You make the rules. And you do whatever feels achievable for you.
This is all about raising awareness – awareness by you, for you.
One way in which you might increase your awareness is to carry your plastic waste with you all day in a see-through bag.
Nothing like pushing that ‘out of sight, out of mind’ excuse out of the way!
I’ve personally found that planning is key to success.
So make a mental note of what is coming up for you today – are you on the commute? Are you eating out? Are you socialising with friends? Do you have appointments to get to? Do you need to go shopping? Are you planning some home cooked meals?
All of these events can potentially create plastic waste, so it’s a good idea to mentally walk through your day and imagine where you might create waste.
Then decide on your strategy to avoid coming home with plastic at the end of the day!
Perhaps you need to shop differently, go somewhere else to eat, practise saying ‘no straw thank you’ to the waiter, take a reusable coffee cup with you, make a packed lunch instead of buying a sandwich.
Go ahead now and plan where you think you might need to change your behaviour today.
Then go out and make this your best Zero Waste day ever.
I’m counting on ya!
If you need help, the crucial thing to remember here is that reducing plastic in your life, doesn’t necessarily mean going out and spending money on ‘non plastic’ alternatives. In this post from Polly, she shares Zero Waste essentials you probably already have in your home.
