Welcome to Zero Waste Week 2018 – Day Four!

zero waste week 2018 day four - cleaning your home with out plastic

So far you’ve thought about reducing plastic in the bathroom and kitchen. Today we’re staying in the kitchen for another challenge.

We’re going to look at your household cleaning routine.

Chances are your sprays, polishes and cleaning products all come in plastic bottles.

And I want you to think outside the box.

The first question is ‘Do I really need this?’

I mean, do you?

In our Grandmother’s day, household cleaning was done with minimal products – perhaps some borax, lemons and vinegar.

And I’m sure her home was clean and fresh (and probably healthier than yours, thanks to the natural ingredients she was using).

Fortunately, I’ve written an entire book about household cleaning WITHOUT using loads of products. You can buy borax and bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) in cardboard, vinegar in glass and lemons, well, they come with their own packaging courtesy of Mother nature.

In this article, you can read a few recipes for free.

And here is one of my favourite recipes that we use all the time at Zero Waste Towers – it’s called Thieves blend and makes the most amazing anti bacterial multi purpose cleaner. You’re going to love it!

Frankie often cleans her home using some of the methods her Nan used. In this blog post she shares her top 5 natural ingredients – all of which are available sans plastic.

Meanwhile Meg shares her wonderful zero waste cleaning routine here.

Today’s challenge…

When you’ve finished the cleaning products you already have (remember, the most zero waste purchase is none at all!) what will you do to change your household cleaning routine?

Check out the this year’s sponsors. They have a fantastic range of products and services available to help you reduce your waste. Thank you for supporting the brands that support me.
