Some Highlights from Zero Waste Week 2022

What a campaign week! It was an emotional rollercoaster for sure.

I began the week by making an announcement that after fifteen years, this would be the final year of a content-led campaign. I shared my deeply personal reason for that here.

So it was a bitter sweet week for me.

And later it became a week of mourning for many people across the world, as Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday, just two days after she had appointed our 15th prime minister.

It would appear though, that no matter what we are going through – and even with participants being affected by some huge changes in their lives due to food and fuel price rises – you were still as engaged and enthusiastic as ever about Zero Waste Week. And that means so much to me and Anna. Thank you for your unwavering support and for wanting to be part of the solution

Here are some of the highlights from the 2022 campaign:

Football’s Going Zero Waste!

In conjunction with Zero Waste Week, UEFA launched its Circular Economy Guidelines. The Guidelines will help national associations, leagues, clubs, event organisers and other football stakeholders move towards the target of zero plastic waste and food waste – within UEFA, across UEFA events and collaboratively across European football – by 2030. Reducing Plastic Waste with the Body Shop

The Body Shop told its followers that if we switch to refillables, we could collectively save over 25 tonnes of plastic. This so beautifully reminds us of the foundation of Zero Waste Week, which is together, our small acts can make a big difference.

Saturday Kitchen

Saturday Kitchen invited low-waste chef Max La Manna to share ways to reduce waste in the kitchen & make food go further.

Lidl’s Promote Waste Not Boxes

Lidl promoted their amazing ‘waste not’ food boxes. I always go and browse ours in our local store. For £1.50 you get around 5kg of fruit and vegetables which are still good to use, but would have otherwise been thrown away. After a successful trial, these boxes are now available in all stores.

Samsung and Nigel Kabvina Reduce Food Waste

Chef Nigel Kabvina, who has over 3.5 million Tik Tok followers, teamed with Samsung to share ideas on reducing food waste. Click on the picture below to read his ideas.

Hawksbill Rum value sustainability within their brand. They use lighter weight glass bottles, use corks made from waste materials and donate 10% of their profits to protecting the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle.

To celebrate Zero Waste Week, Hawksbill launched a Mango spiced and Pineapple spiced rum made from fruit that would otherwise have gone to waste.

Students at Nottingham University Reduce Waste

Nottingham university shared ways for students to reduce their use of disposables on campus and save some money in the process. And they’ve measured impact too. During august, students collectively:

Hello Magazine highlighted the most influential royals who are taking the lead by recycling clothes, repeating outfits, shopping from small ethical brands, and sharing their wedding dresses. According to the article, the late Prince Philip continued to wear same the black shoes he used on the day he married the Queen for more than seven decades. Independent Interview Top Chefs for Tips

The Independent interviewed several chefs to gather their tips on reducing food waste. I loved the idea of making your own stock cubes. I regularly make stock, but hadn’t taken that next step of making stock cubes – genius!
